State Street Interinsular

DON"T be fooled by the overall score line, but GIAAC had the best of the fantastic State Street Inter-Insular track and field weekend.

The women's result meant it was always going to be nigh on impossible to regain the overall trophy, but as club president I was so proud of all our athletes' efforts, including those ladies who had to put themselves through the mill for the sake of the odd point.

In a nutshell, GIAAC won the blue riband Burton trophy men's match, our under-17 men won the youths trophy, the under-17 girls pushed their Jersey counterparts hard and thereafter we won the under-15s, under-13s and under-11s combined trophies.

All together it was a brilliant effort. Well done.

Also, well done to the back-up team who ensured it was the best run inter-insular ever. There are too many to mention but it once again proved to me what a great club we've got, with so many willing to work so hard.

Enjoy your short rest T and F athletes and let's kick on in 2009 and dominate the Island Games in Aland and finally win back that overall trophy in Jersey next September.

An excellent array of photo's from the event, with all athletes being featured can be viewed by following this link. http://www.e-motion.me.uk/portfolio39863.html

Success For Fiona at European Masters

Fiona Argent has returned from the European Masters’ Champs, held in Slovenia, with a bronze medal in the Heptathlon in the 50 – 54 age group. Having taken up multi-eventing only a year ago, this was her first heptathlon. She set 3 pbs on the first day, in the 80mHurdles, High jump and Shot, rounding it off with a win in the  200m in 31.48secs. The second day got off to a bad start with a poor performance in the long jump, but she made up ground in the javelin, and recorded her fastest 800m to date within a multi-event competition of 2min 58.13. At the top end of this age-band Fiona was delighted with her results and hopes to consolidate her success in the next age-group.

Easter Festival 2008

Thewlis lands HM win, but it's Merrien & Woodvine overall. Nottingham University student Johnathan Thewlis unleashed a powerful mid race surge to leave behind the chase pack and a overhaul long time leader Dan Merckel and go on to build almost a 1 and a half minute winning margin over Lee Merrien who himself held off Aldershot's Ben Lindsay in a sprint finish. Andrea Woodvine ran strongly to convincingly beat team-mate Vicky Gill and take the overall Easter Festival title.

Results are posted here. Overall positions are posted here. Half Marathon Photo Album.

XC Relay - Merrien cements lead. Running the final leg for the Guernsey Island team, Lee Merrien anchored the team to a win and placed himself firmly on course to win the overall Easter Festival Title. Aldershot men's team put up a strong challenge holding onto the lead until just after the start of the final leg when Merrien finally put the host club ahead. GIAAC's Alan Rowe set a M40 course record of 10:07 in chasing Aldershot's talented junior Joe Morwood. Whilst the wind had moderated temperatures were decidedly chilly and increasingly damp conditions made the technical sections of the course slippery.

Vicky Gill ran strongly posting a sub 11 minute clocking and crucially put enough places between her and Andrea Woodvine to regain the overall lead by just one point.

Team results can be found here and Individual rankings can be found here.

Whilst the freezing northerly gale whips up the sea, Steve Dawes battles onwards.

Full Course XC - Woodvine overturns 10k result. Whilst Lee Merrien (pictured below, left) continued to defy the conditions and the opposition with a second win in the 27th Easter Festival, it was Aldershot's (AFD)  Andrea Woodvine (pictured below, right) who put 4 places between herself and AFD team mate and 10km leading lady Vicky Gill, to take the overall lead in the Ladies category. Conditions at L'Ancresse were harsh with continuing cold gale force winds blowing in from the north making conditions extreme. Results are posted here. Overall positions are posted here. Photo album here.

Lee Merrien Full Course

Lee Merrien wins 10km.  Overcoming a sizable field and gale force winds, Guernsey's Lee Merrien won the opening race of the Easter Festival stopping the clock at 31min 14 seconds- an impressive time for the conditions. Aldershot's Vicky Gill lead the women's field home finishing 17th overall in 35:33.  Results posted here. 10km photo album is here.

Island Cross Country Championships 27th Jan 2008, Footes Lanes

Pre race favourites Steve Dawes and Louise Perrio were clear winners of the respective men's and women's Island cross country titles.

In a race held in perfect conditions at Footes Lane Dawes was accompanied by Dave Dyke for the first half of the 6 mile race but forged clear in the later stages to breast the tape a minute clear of Dyke in a time of 35 minutes 15 seconds. Lee Garland was third a further 35 seconds behind.

Perrio was always in control of the womens field and was holding a top six place place in the overall race as she crossed the finish line, at 4 miles, in 26minutes 2 seconds. Martine Scholes ran strongly over the second half of the race to  pull clear of young Sarah Mercier who placed third.

Results here.

The junior races yielded winning runs from
U17   -   Will Bodkin, Sarah Mercier      U15  -    Marcus Heaume, Nicole Petit U13 - David Campbell, Christina Neves

Hampshire Cross Country Championships 2008

After biding his time and waiting to the end of the 7 mile long race before showing his class Lee Merrien emerged as a comfortable winner of the Men's county cross county title. In the 200 strong field Steve Dawes placed 9th.

Guernsey's other main hope for an individual medal, Louise Perrio came tantalisingly close but narrowly missed out in finishing 4th in the womens 5 mile event. Louise Damon led home a strong Winchester contingent that dominated the major placings but with Nikki Neale and Martine Scholes both in the top 10 and Helen Hadjam 15th, the Sarnian women claimed team silver. With Neale and Scholes both placing in the top 3 veteran positions.
Led by Merrien and Dawes and backed up by Alan Rowe, Dave Dyke, Lee Garland and Mark Mercier Guernsey's men gained team bronze behind Aldershot/Farnham and Winchester.

The club's stalwart runners claimed more medals in the hands of the veteran men with Alan Rowe(individual gold), Dave Dyke(bronze) backed up by Francis Kehoe and Paul Ingrouille to gain team silver. The team were initially awarded gold but on a recount were displaced by the smallest of margins! (Ingy blames him self entirely)

After stamping his name on the Championship trophy for the 4th time, a record not matched in the last 50 years, Merrien now heads off to South Africa for warm weather training at altitude before returning to a busy racing schedule in February that will see him targeting a place in Britains team for the cross country world championships.

The Juniors all ran really well. The best performance was undoubtedly from Sarah Mercier, 6th in the U17 Ladies, her highest ever position in the championships. The Under 13 Boys also placed well, with David Campbell a fine 7th, and George Mason, with still another year in the age-group, 8th. Will Bodkin placed 8th in the Under 17 Men he is also at the bottom of his age-group and this was another good run, as was Nicky Petit's 12th in the Under 15 Girls in her first run off the island. The Under 15 Boys also put in some solid runs which bodes well for the team competition next year.

A photo album from the day will follow!!

Beachy Head Marathon

Last weekend saw three members of the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletics Club run the Beachy Head marathon at Eastbourne. The course takes runners over the South Downs and is best described as a hilly cross-country marathon including the usual countryside stiles, gates, walls and cattle grids to be crossed, passes through several small villages en route, and finishes in the last six miles with the gruelling Seven Sisters hills and another two mile climb before dropping down to the finish back at Beachy Head. Due to the difficulty of the terrain, runners times are therefore not comparable to flat road courses.

The organisers restrict entries to 700 runners, 700 joggers and 350 walkers and this enables the marshal points to cope with the spread of abilities. The conditions were ideal with the temperature warmer than average for the time of year and little wind, and Paul Hooker running his second Beachy Head marathon was the first local home in 3 hours 43 minutes, just two minutes outside his time of last year and finishing a very creditable 48th overall. Next home was Roger Naftel running his third Beachy Head Marathon finishing in 235th place with a time of 4 hours 26 minutes and only 11 minutes outside his own personal best. This too was an outstanding performance considering his running schedule of the previous three weekends consisting of the 15 mile cliff path race and a training run on the Church to Church route in Guernsey and followed by the Exmoor stagger (a 16 mile cross country run). Coming in 1 minute later (and overtaken by Roger Naftel in the last half mile) was Greg Robert running his first Beachy Head marathon who unfortunately suffered stomach problems from half distance and had to walk much of the last 10 miles of the race.

Fly for Sport Update.

WELL done everyone.
Athletics is number one when it comes to supporting the Fly for Sport fund-raising initiative introduced earlier this year.
Consistent use of the FFS vouchers which were circulated to members has seen us top the table of the 10 sports who benefit directly from the scheme.
A meeting of the FFS trustees next week should confirm that athletics is in for a handsome windfall for 2006.
That said, can I urge everyone involved with the club to continue to keep using the FFS vouchers and if you are not doing so already, start!
Every return flight with Blue islands using the FFS voucher will earn us £5.
With the likely expansion of our favourite airline this could lead to GIAAC greatly benefitting in the future.

This Years AFM SUPER 6 kicks off next month!

The Guernsey Athletics Club will again be running this event which proved so successful last year. Amalgamated facility Management (AFM) will again be sponsoring the event which will see Lee Merrien (the islands Athletics Development Officer) visiting all the secondary schools, giving boys & girls from years 8 & 9 a chance to particpate in the indoor athletics scheme.

The event format will remain un changed from last year with 4 events being contested - The sprint, the Jump, the Throw and the Endurance run. The event gives kids aged between 12 and 14 the chance to compete in athletics during the winter with great prizes on offer!

Athletes can also keep up to date on how they, and fellow pupils are getting on with the online Super 6 rankings.

Speak to your Schools PE Teacher or contact the club if you require more information about the event

State Street Interinsular

INTER-INSULAR athletics matches have been going for nearly 60 years but few, if any, can have been any more enthralling than this past weekend's in FB Fields, Jersey.
Yes, overall we lost, but everyone connected with the GIAAC teams should be proud of playing a part in two days of exciting competition.
The junior competitions have never been more hotly contested. In recent years Jersey have raised the bar and I'm proud to say we have responded superbly. We match them now and the Spartans were astounded to see the size and quality of our teams.
It was a great effort all-round and congratulations, especially, to the under-15s who won back the combined trophy after six years of Jersey domination.
There is not enough room to single out individual athletes but rest assured in my eyes and those of your dedicated coaches, virtually all of you were brilliant. Well done and next year we will DEFINITELY get them.

British Masters UK champs, 28th 29th July Alexander Stadium B'ham

Fiona Argent wins Gold in 100m 50 - 54 category and Bronze 200m.
She was quote ' delighted to come home with a gold as I simply haven't been able to fit in all the sessions which would have taken me to faster times. I hope to consolidate the earlier work however with some quality work before my next championships'.

Argent looks forward to defending her Irish sprint titles at Tullamore later this month.

Garland closes in on WC place, sub 14min 5km for Merrien.

Dale Garland won the 400mtr Hurdles at the UK World Championships trials held at Manchester this weekend and in doing do improved his personal best and Island record to 49.79 secs. The time is crucially .01 sec faster than the World Championships B standard, the standard against which a nation may send one athlete to the championships if none have achieved the A standard.

Also competing at the trials in Machester, Lee Merrien finished in an impressive 4th place over 5,000mtrs recording a personal best and Island record whilst smashing the 14 minute barrirer for the first time. He stopped the clock in 13min 57.66 secs. The race was won by European Cross Country champion Mo Farah 13:40.19.
