Race 5 took some tired athletes to the Track at Footes Lane, where the event was fought out over two 800m races. With 10 second time penalties being given for each place there was plenty of opportunity for overall positions to change and the format produced an evening of exciting races.
The athletes in each division were split into two semi finals with half qualifying for the A final, the remainder running in the B final and in Division 4, after an exciting tussle, overall leader Mark Babbe, was overtaken in the finishing straight by Damian Wallen who claimed victory on the night but with all the leaders finishing high up in the A final the overall clasification was not altered much. In Division 3 leader Sean Murphy lost a large chunk of time as he finished well down and this allowed Marc Tetlow and Lee Smith to close up to within 10 and 11 seconds respectively overall. On the night, Andrew Elliott narrowly prevailed from Smith and Tetlow.
Division 2 also saw some big time changes as overall leader Simon Streek saw his large advantage halved by winner Steve Bienvenu and second place Jim Elliott. Streek's lead is now less than 30 seconds from Ian Young with Elliott a few seconds further back and Bienvenu less than one minute adrift.
The most significant move came in Division 1, where second placed athlete Dave Dyke lost out on a place in the final by centimetres, only to see his closest rival for that spot, Dave Holmes run strongly to finish second in the A final. The 50 seconds he gained over Dyke now gives him a 23 second lead in the battle for second. Mark Mercier consolidated his lead further by winning the race with ease.
Tonight sees the athletes return to the cliffs for the 8 km time trial. With the runners starting in reverse order, at one minute intervals, there is plenty of opportunity for positions to change dramatically, as the course once again incorporates the Moulin Huet and Saints Harbour/Icart steps, over 500 in all.
Two semi finals were run in each division with athletes qualifying for an A or B final. 10 seconds is added to an athletes overall time for each place in the final. 1st place A final = no time added, 2nd place 10 seconds, 3rd place 20 seconds. The first athlete in the B final receives 10 seconds more than the athlete finishing last in the A final.
