Steve Dawes had to hold off strong competition by two of the islands top triathletes on his way to winning the GIAAC club 10km Road championship race in a time of 36 minutes 35 seconds.
Jeremy Poole led the race for the opening 2km but, soon after being caught by Dawes, Poole's fellow multi-eventer Tim Johns took up the running.
Running into a slight headwind Johns and Dawes shared the lead and drew steadily clear of the field. It was only in the final kilometre, on the drop from Albecq to Cobo that Dawes finally drew away and crossed the line 15 seconds clear.
"My legs felt so heavy I was unable to go with the early leader" explained Dawes and went on to express disappointment with his time but, though not strong, the North Easterly wind was blowing into the faces of the runners for the whole race and was felt by many to have added about a minute onto the finishing times.
Despite this handicap Johns ran within 4 seconds of his previous best time and is clearly in good shape for the coming triathlon season.
After trailing the leaders over the opening stages Mike Doyle also caught Poole but within the closing kilometres Pete Wickins had the pair in his sights. Wickins was to catch Doyle on the line but Poole proved too strong on the run-in and crossed the line 5 seconds clear in third place.
Another triathlete to post a great performance was Shanine Wray who, clocking a time of 43 minutes 38 seconds, finished nearly three 3 minutes clear of the next woman finishers.
