Nick Despres won the "Guernsey Tom" cliff path trophy for the second year in succession and left his closest challenger, Paul Ingrouille, wondering where he went wrong after one of the most intriguing races in the 20 year history of the event.

Despres 13 minute winning margin over Pete Wickins belies the fact that it was Ingrouille who appeared to be heading for victory until he was reduced to a walk with less than 3 miles remaining.

Despres got the 15 mile event off to a fast start and following the first major climb, after 3 miles at Jerbourg, held a 25 second lead.

By the next major viewing point at Icart (7 miles) Ingrouille, had closed the gap and, after moving into the lead before the Petit Bot 8 mile point, appeared to have the race in his hands.

By the 11 mile mark at Prevote Watchtower Ingrouille's lead was over a minute and by Les Tielles(12 1/2 miles) it was near a minute and a half but he was faltering and was soon to stop. He later explained that he was "No longer able to coordinate a running action".

Unaware of Ingrouille's problems until he passed his static challenger Despres sportingly offered his assistance before heading on to a massive victory in a time of 1hr 52 minutes 21 seconds.

After passing Jason Le Ray in the second half of the race Dave Merrien posted another classy performance to gain third.

Cliff path running fanatics Winkle and Chris de la Mare incorporated the race in their Silver Wedding Anniversary celebrations with Chris coming out on top after leading her husband the whole way.
