GIAAC First Half Full Course
2.7m Cross Country
Sunday 1st September 2002

After a close race Nick Despres drew clear of Steve Dawes in the final mile to win the opening cross country race of the GIAAC's winter season.

Despres clocked 14minutes 43 seconds for the 2.7 mile Pembroke course. A strong finish by Jonathan Robbins saw him also pass Dawes in the final half mile to claim the runner up spot 10 seconds adrift of Despres. Dawes was a further 10 seconds behind in third.

Debbie Doherty was leading woman clocking 17minutes 39 seconds to finish 18th of the 41 strong field.

The short 2.7 mile distance allowed some of the islands top juniors to compete and notable performances came from 14 year old Mark Mercier in 8th place and twelve year old Matt Loveridge in 15th. In one of the closest finishes States Board of Health President Deputy Peter Roffey gave a gutsy performance to place 26th but was pipped by 11 year old Daniel Carre.
