GIAAC Road Race
4miles - Vazon to Rousse
Oct 13th 2002

With many locally based athletes racing in the mainland it was left to a reduced field of fifteen hardy runners to contest the GIAAC's 4 Mile Road Race held in windy conditions over a course starting from Vazon and finishing at Rousse.

Steve Dawes dominated proceedings and had broken clear of the field in the opening mile. Behind him Gordon Mercier was locked in battle with Richard Saunders, who, following a horrendous ankle break, which required extensive surgery, is undergoing a long period of rehabilitation.

Dawes extended his lead throughout the race and crossed the finish line in 20 minutes 17 seconds, over a minute clear of Mercier who had stretched his margin over Saunders to 36 seconds.

Leading woman, Gail Merrien, ran a superb race to claim fourth place after a ding-dong battle with John Dedman. Top super veteran Robbie Froome was 6th.
