Alan Rowe chalked up a predicted victory in the GIAAC's 7 Mile Liberation Day Road race but was pushed all the way by a resurgent Francis Kehoe.
After leading the 86 strong field from the Rousse start line Rowe dropped last years race winner, Nick Despres, within the opening two miles and by the second Mile mark, at L'Ancresse, appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory.
Kehoe, however, had not read the script and, after dropping Paul Ingrouille and Despres in the run towards Bordeaux, was soon eating into Rowe¹s lead and as the runners passed South Side was a mere 10 seconds behind the long striding leader with Ingrouille a further 15 seconds behind.
Rowe reacted to the challenge and after edging further clear through Bulwer Avenue gradually increased his lead to cross the finish line 22 seconds clear in 38 minutes 15 seconds
There was strength in depth through the field with one of the most notable runs coming from Mark Elliott
Over the last three months fitness specialist Gail Merrien has put a string of good running performances together and as well as leading the women home in a time of 48 minutes 21 seconds had the pleasure of leading fellow fitness instructor Andy Walker across the line in 29th place.
