The final championship race of the GIAAC's winter season ended in a rare tie after long time rivals Marcel le Clerc and Paul Ingrouille chose to run across the line together after spending the final half of the race battling along the coast into a gale force wind.
Sarah Queripel completed her clean sweep of the womenıs Championship events with another comfortable victory but, along with the other competitors, her time was hampered by the conditions.
A new course was used for the 10 mile road event and it was clear before the start that the strong South Westerly wind would have a dominating effect on the race.
The small field of 20 started with some lethargy into the windward opening stretch and it was only near the first mile mark, when the course went inland, that the pace quickened and serious racing began.
Ingrouille made his effort near the two mile mark but did not create enough of a margin and a valiant effort by Le Clerc near halfway bought the leading pair together just prior to the 6 mile mark. At this stage Mike Doyle was a distant third over a minute behind.
With the last four miles being a battle into the strong South Westerly between L'Islet and Vazon the race took the form of a 'cat and mouse' event with close slipstreaming being followed by series of sudden break attempts but neither runner was able to establish a winning margin and with half a mile remaining a truce was drawn.
Doyle held his third position and crossed the line nearly four minutes behind the leading pair who finished in 59 minutes 12 seconds.
His superior performances in the seasons opening races ensure that Ingrouille can reclaim the overall championship title from Le Clerc with Queripel being a clear winner of the womenıs winter title.
