The GIAAC's four race December Cross Country series was expected to yield some close races but few could have predicted that the first three in the opening race would be separated by less than a second.
In a finish that would have been more fittingly placed at the end of the 100M straight at Footes lane Chris Carre and Nick Despres narrowly missed out as Paul Ingrouille crossed the line a stride clear. The leading duo were credited with a time of 22 minutes 13 seconds for the 4 mile course held over two laps of the club's Bunker Hill circuit.
With runners being split into separate league tables according to standard there was competitive racing right through the 48 strong field.
Jean Pierre Mace, the leading division two finisher, made a strong claim for inclusion in the veteran squad for the forthcoming County Championships with a hard earned 7th place while Deborah Doherty, the leading woman, also posted a notable performance to finish over a half a minute clear of Gail Merrien, Jenny Elliott was a further 50 metres behind.
With a larger than expected turnout the organisers have extended the league format to four divisions and this Sunday sees the action move to Lucksall (L'Ancresse). Runners in the top two divisions will compete over a 6 mile course while divisions three and four will compete over 4 miles.
