GIAAC Jones & Partners/GIAAC Winter League Race 6
Vazon Road Mile
7th April 2002

With the race run into a gale force headwind times took a battering in the final race of the Jones and Partners Winter League but the Mile Road race suited Steve Dawes who again ran out a comfortable winner four seconds clear of Gordon Mercier.

The shorter distance also appeared to suit Eddie Higgins who crossed the line a fraction behind Mercier in third.

Prior to the event there had been talk of the possibility of a challenge to Gary Broster's 4min 16 sec course record but on the day the atrocious conditions put paid to any fast times and ironically the race yielded the slowest ever winning time 5 minutes 53 seconds.

Starting at the Richmond end of Vazon the race was run into a North Easterly gale to the finish at Crabby Jacks and not surprisingly the field got off to a lethargic start with runners jostling for shelter.

Tim Johns tried to inject some pace in the opening quarter mile but with half the race run the majority of the field was still in contention and it was only with 600M remaining when Dawes, off the back of a hard winters track training, used his speed to pull clear of Higgins.

Mercier passed Higgins in the closing stages to edge second. Dawes win maintained his place at the head of the six race series.

Positions at the head of the other 4 divisions also remained unchanged with Higgins (div 2), Phil Touzeau (div 4) and Alison Jefferies (div 5) scoring maximum points.

After a close battle with Brian Johnson newcomer Ashley Spencer headed division 3.
