Track middle distance star Lee Merrien showed his versatility with an accomplished run to win the GIAAC's 10Km Road Championship event.
It was a rare excursion onto the roads for the double Island games medallist but after dispensing with the rest of the field within the opening 400 Metres Merrien went on to win by over 2 minutes from Nick Despres.
"I wanted to give myself a good hard workout" said the winner who, after showing superb form in the late summer, is back into the stamina phase of his training. His time of 33 minutes 27 seconds was "solid" for a race run mainly into the face of a moderate headwind.
Sarah Queripel extended her winning streak with another comfortable win in the women's race. Debbie Doherty, who like Merrien is more at home over the shorter track events, made an attempt to hold Queripel over the opening stages of the race but faded after the runners rounded Perelle just prior to the halfway mark. Queripel went on to widen the margin to nearly three minutes by the finish.
Despres was accompanied by Paul Ingrouille for the majority of the race and only broke clear in the closing mile as the pair descended from Albecq towards the Grandes Rocques finish.
Ingrouille's third place was enough to maintain his position at the head of the senior men's championship table while Despres moves above Marcel Le Clerc into second. Le Clerc never challenged for the major positions but narrowly held off Francis Kehoe for fourth place.
Eighth placed Pete Wickins led the veterans home while Brian Holden, in 15th was leading super-veteran.
