JONES & PARTNERS WINTER LEAGUE RACE 2
FULL COURSE - L'ANCRESSE
(4.75Miles)
SUNDAY 28th JANUARY 2001

Nick Despres brought his busy January to a close with a second victory in the Jones and Partners Winter League. His win stretched his lead in the top division to 2 points over Pete Wickins. In a close race with Paul Ingrouille, a non-entrant in the league due to other commitments, Despres prevailed with a show of strength over the closing mile.

The leaders of the other 4 divisions were put under pressure as Pete De Bertrand, Colin Guilmoto, Gary Allen and Sally Dowinton posted divisional victories that narrowed the gap at the top of their respective tables.

A surprisingly large field of 60 runners braved the rain to take part in the 4.7 mile event which was run on a waterlogged Lancresse Common. Despres, Mike Doyle and Paul Ingrouille stretched clear of the field soon after the start with Steve Dawes and Wickins leading the chasers. Towards the middle section of the race, with runners having to pick their way round the many patches of standing water, Ingrouille and Despres forged clear and were to stay together until the final 600 meters.

As the runners came in sight of the Pembroke finish line Despres struck for home opened up a six second winning margin on Ingrouille. Wickins also coped well with the slushy surface and, after passing Doyle in the fourth mile, held on for third a further minute behind.

Debbie Doherty led home the strong womenıs contingent. She later admitted to struggling with the conditions but held onto a lead built up early in the race to come home 29 seconds clear of Shanine Wray. Pete De Bertrand overturned his earlier Division 2 defeat at the hands of Tom Oliver while fellow super-veteran Colin Guilmoto led in the Division three runners. With the Inter Insular Cross Country only a month away the depth of Guernseyıs strong Œsupervetı team could well be increased by the return of Robbie Froome who finished over 30 seconds clear of Guilmoto in 18th place.

A complete turnaround of positions leaves Gary Allen, Chris De La Mare and Dave Bird level at the top of Division Four while Dave Bartlett and Emma Mourant head Division 5.
