GIAAC JONES & PARTNERS WINTER LEAGUE
RACE 1 - 3 MILE ROAD RACE - COBO
SUNDAY 14th JANUARY 2001
Division 1 holder Nick Despres extended on his good run in the previous
weekend's County Championships to win the opening race of the GIAAC Jones &
Partners Winter League. Despres stretched out an 18 second winning margin over Pete Wickins to
complete the 3 mile distance in 16 minutes 2 seconds.
With the race also featuring as part of the clubıs Junior championships the field was bolstered to 79 runners by a number of under 15 and under 13
competitors.
Talented 13 year old Mark Mercier proved too good for many of the senior runners and finished in 13 place whilst 14 year old Island Games hopeful
Sarah Hume was 4th woman to finish in 43rd place overall.
In the absence of Mark Anthony , who has made fast starts his trademark, Steve Dawes stepped in to lead for the majority of the opening mile. Nick
Despres, Mike Doyle and Pete Wickins joined him in the rise up Route du Cobo. As the leading group rounded the corner onto Rue Cohu and past
Sauzmares Park Despres made his move to break clear. After turning onto Rue Charuee and then past the Houge du Pommier Wickins and Doyle remained
together until the final half mile and despite eventually pulling clear Wickins could not close the gap on Despres, who crossed the Mare De Carteret
finish line with a victory margin of 100 metres. Dawes held off Colin Ozanne for a hard earned 4th place.
Tom Oliver proved a comfortable winner of Division 2. The super-veteran athlete finished 31 seconds clear of Ian Le Moigne who still found a turn of
speed in his legs after returning from the 100 Mile Himalayan challenge.
The Division 3 race was a closer affair with winner Paul Davies finishing just 2 seconds clear of Colin Guilmoto who has just joined Oliver in the
super-veteran ranks. Shanine Wray was unable to match the pace of the her divisionıs leaders but finished top woman 18 seconds clear of Division 4
winner Chris De La Mare.
Emma Mourant continued her return to form and finished nearly a minute clear of Dave Bartlett lead in the Division 5 runners.
