JONES & PARTNERS WINTER LEAGUE - RACE
3
Vazon Road Race
(4.5Miles)
SUNDAY 18th FEBRUARY 2001
Nick Despres proved his consistency in
more ways than one while clocking another victory in the GIAAC Jones and
Partners Winter league. Another positive piece of front running saw Despres
clock his third consecutive victory and puts him well on course to defend the
division one title. Such was the margin of Despres victory that there was
some initial speculation amongst club officials over the possibility of a new
course record, further checks revealed that Paul Sheard's record remained
untouched but that Despres had in fact produced an exact repeat of his own
previous years winning time with a clocking of 23 minutes 36 seconds for the 4.5
mile course.
Pete Wickins was a distant second, over 2 minutes behind
the runaway victor. With the inter insular cross country only a fortnight away,
the club's selectors would have normally hoped to have already finalised team
selection but a host of improved performances ensures that the team will not be
named until after next weeks Island Cross Country Championships. A welcome
return to distance running by hockey star Richard Saunders and another good
performance by Tim Johns bring them both into the frame for an Island place.
Pete De Bertrand produced another quality run to sneak past fellow supervet Tom
Oliver and now leads Division 2 while Colin Guilmoto posted another narrow
victory over Paul Davies to move a point clear in Division 3.
After
competing as a novice in the 2000 Opta Challenge Gary Allen's running continues
to improve and he now leads Division 4. While, allowing for the discard of her
missed first race, Sally Dowinton had another strong run to move her to the top
of Division 5.
