GIAAC 10
MILES ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP
SPECSAVERS LOOP
(10miles)
SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER 2000
After a string of minor
placings Paul Ingrouille finally laid claim to the GIAAC’s 10 Mile Road
Championship Trophy. Ingrouille’s task was made somewhat easier by the absence
of Alan Rowe. Marcel Le Clerc had been expected to mount the strongest challenge
but a spirited run saw Pete Wickins clinch the runners up spot.
The
race followed a two lap course starting and finishing in the Specsavers grounds
with the route taking the runners past St. Saviours Church and the Longfrie Inn
before returning past the Airport. After quarter distance the runners passed the
Longfrie for the first time and following a steady start the leading trio had
Nick Despres and Mike Doyle for company. At this point Ingrouille took the
initiative and had stretched out a five second margin by the three mile mark
with Le Clerc leading the chase from Despres and Wickins.
Ingrouille
reached the halfway point 25 seconds clear of Le Clerc but after dropping back
to fourth place Wickins was again running strongly. By ¾ distance the
veteran’s charge had taken him back into second place but Ingrouille still
held his advantage and with the wind at his tail was able to extend it over the
closing stages to cross the finish line with a lead of 56 seconds in a time of
57 minutes 53 seconds. Passing the Longfrie for the second time Le Clerc had to
respond to hold off the challenge of Despres but could not get on terms with
Wickins and crossed the line 15 seconds in arrears.
Shanine
Wray was a comfortable winner of the women’s title. With Helen Tucker retiring
at the halfway point Wray was left holding a significant lead over Sally Whalley
and looked comfortable as she crossed the line over 4 minutes clear of her rival
in 75 minutes 15 seconds.
With
the first major road championship out of the way and the County Championships
looming local distance runners will turn their eyes towards the Island Cross
Country Championships to be held on December 10th. After a string of victories
Alan Rowe may face his strongest challenge to date with newcomer Andy Fookes
expected to race. Up and coming middle distance hope Lee Merrien will also prove
hard to beat.
