5km ROAD RACE - Vale Church - Northside
SUNDAY 12th NOVEMBER 2000
Pete
Wickins and Gordon Mercier turned back the clock 25 years to dominate the
GIAAC’s 5km Road Race held between Vale Church and Northside.
The
veteran athletes swept past newcomer Steve Dawes after 800m with Wickins
gradually extending his advantage to 34 seconds by the finish. Mercier
maintained his effort for a well-deserved runners-up spot while Colin Ozanne
continued his return from injury to place third. Another strong run saw Debbie
Doherty as the first woman across the line in 12th place.
Both
Wickins and Mercier first made an impact as youth athletes in the 1970’s but,
unlike the ever-present Wickins, Mercier took a break and, perhaps inspired by
the ability of his children Mark and Sarah, returned two seasons ago. Since his
return he has edged up through the field with each race with this performance
perhaps his best in 20 years.
