GIAAC/Jones & Partners Winter League 2000
Race No 6 – Vazon Mile
SUNDAY 28th MAY 2000

Lee thrives in the wind

Lee Garland didn’t get the complete result he wanted – the Division One championship – but found consolation in victory in yesterday’s one mile wind-assisted dash along the Vazon coast road.

The event was the final race in the highly popular GIAAC/Jones and Partners Winter Series, and for the shortest of the six races the field were glad to find a strong wind blowing at their backs. Garland took the line honours in a handy 4 minutes 31 seconds, a new PB for him over the course, but it was runner-up Nick Despres who lifted the overall Division One title. For Garland to take the title he needed to defeat his rival by three clear places and from early on that never appeared likely. Despres stayed with Garland for all but the final quarter mile or so when the latter’s greater leg speed finally told. At the finish there were 8 seconds between the two, with Despres finishing a further 12 seconds ahead of veteran Pete Wickins who pipped promising younster Andrew Mauger, who clocked an impressive 4.55.

Not too far adrift, down in 12th, came another one for the future, Mark Mercier. The Year 7 Grammar School boy clocked 5.24 and registered another personal best in the process. Garland, like the rest, was grateful for the wind. ‘It was pushing us along most of the way’, he said within minutes of the finish.

With the Division Two and Three titles already safely in the hands of Val Phillips and Paul Vaudin respectively, the main interest of the race was down the field where Alan Solway, Alun Williams and Shanine Wray were battling it out for the Division Four championship. Solway, plagued by Achilles tendon problems for much of the season, has finished the winter programme in much better shape though, and by finishing ahead of his rivals yesterday did enough to claim the division trophy.

Twenty four hours’ earlier Paul Ingrouille ran a superb race to take the honours in the annual Sark 10. Run over a new course Ingrouille clocked 59-15 to win by almost 3 minutes from Sark resident Mike Doyle with Swiss visitor Roland Brand placing third. Super veteran Chris de la Mare pipped Val Phillips for the honour of first woman, while in the 2.5 children’s race Mark Mercier came home more than a minute ahead of Matthew Loveridge. Andrew Carre was third.
