DOUBLE FULL COURSE - L'ANCRESSE
(9.5Miles)
SUNDAY 21st MAY 2000
Veteran finally wins
Pete Wickins scored his first victory in the GIAACs 1999/2000 winter programme, when he won the penultimate race of the season, the double full-course at LAncresse. After nearly nine months of various road and cross country events, there were 30 plus starters for Sundays 9.5 mile stint.
Attacking Doyle Hill at three miles, the veteran saw off the early challenge of Carl Thomson and Colin Ozanne, although by the end of the first circuit Thomson looked to be regaining ground. The relentless north-westerly made for hard work at the start and finish of each lap, and times probably suffered as a result, with Wickins winning time just outside the hour mark.
That said, Shanine Wrays 74-44 for first woman is a very good time in any conditions and is a clear reflection of the progress she has been quietly making since correcting a tendency to over-train earlier in the year. Just over two minutes behind, Helen Tucker can likewise look back with satisfaction at her achievements in a first season with the club.
