GIAAC Liberation Day 7 mile road race
Rousse to White Rock
Tuesday 9th May 2000
Liberation first for Ingrouille
Paul Ingrouille thrived in the heat and at last got his name on the Pessimists Perpetual Trophy with his 38 second victory in yesterdays annual Liberation Day seven mile road race.
Ingrouille who has won many trophies over the years but never this one, headed a possible record entry of 103 starters in the race from Rousse to Town. Conditions were hot and stuffy for the big field, but Ingrouille and Pete Wickins seemed unaffected as they stayed together until Bordeaux.
The younger man then upped the pace and opened up a 40 metre gap which he maintained through to the finish in front of the once Royal Hotel.
Penny Buckingham retained her womens title although she initially found herself trailing Val Phillips. The pair were together at Bulwer Avenue but Buckingham, feeling good, ran clear to win in a time one minute quicker than her 1999 performance.
