GIAAC Winter Handicap Series, Race No. 6
Vazon to Rousse 4 miles
SUNDAY 26th MARCH 2000
Doherty clinches winter championship
As the curtain came down on the GIAACs Sarnian Roofing Winter Handicap Series it was Kevin Lanyon who stole the show, winning the Vazon to Rousse event by the length of the finishing straight, from the Peninsula Hotel to the slipway. Having caught a few of his fellow Division Four contenders by surprise with a fine run in the previous weeks Winter League fixture, he proved that that result was no fluke, as he turned a 6 minute 50 second penalty into a 15 second advantage over second-placed Andy Ozanne, clocking an actual running time of 26-47 for the four mile race.
Danny Blatchford is also hitting form at this late stage of the season, and off an 8-20 handicap he closed to within half a minute of the winner, to finish third in 34-08. All of these improvements have come too late to challenge Debbie Dohertys position at the head of the leaderboard. Doherty has consistently run better and better as the winter has progressed, and this race was another example of how well suited she is to the 3-4 mile distance. Her seventh place, with the days fastest womans time of 25-52 earned her the overall honours for the six-race series, with an aggregate score of 44 points from her five best performances.
After such a promising start to her first year with the club, Tracey Queripel has had to endure the frustration of being sidelined for two months with severe shin splints. She made a brave appearance in the last race and was rewarded with the overall runner-up spot. Times generally were quite quick, as the wind conspired somehow to at times be with, and then against, on the west coast route. Pete Wickins 21-45 was the best of the morning, followed by Michael Ward.
