GIAAC Jones & Partners Winter League
Race 1
Cobo Loop, 3 miles
23 January 2000
Leggy Lee leads home his namesake
The GIAACs Winter League kicked off at a bright and brisk Cobo as nearly 60 competitors opened their year 2000 accounts in the Jones an Partners sponsored series. With over 70 entrants split into five divisions the six-race programme again promises some interesting tussles.
Lee Merrien deposited maximum points in his Division One savings book with a commanding win in the three-mile fixture. From the gun Merrien hit the front, leaving usual pacesetter Mark Anthony for dead. Lee Garland found himself in a similar situation to last year in the same race, chasing the lead and never quite able to get on level terms. By the top of Cobo Road, Merrien had opened a gap of some 60 metres, which he maintained along Rue Cohu. Although Garland halved the deficit down La Charruee, Merrien stepped up the pace again in the final mile to cross the Mare de Carteret finish line 16 seconds clear in 15 minutes 26 seconds. Pete Wickins overtook Anthony mid-race to take third place with 16-11.
Another fantastic run from Val Phillips saw her secure a firm foothold on the Division Two ladder, placing 13th in 17-45, 20 seconds quicker than last year. Debbie Doherty also bettered her 1999 performance by an incredible four and a half minutes! Her overall placing of 25th in 19-19 gives her Division Three title campaign a terrific start. Reinforcing the strength of running within the womens section of the club, third placed Jenny Elliott also took over a minute and a half off her time of 12 months ago, finishing 32nd overall in 20-06.
