Emma Mourant, who shone as a junior competitor, put her three year break behind her to comfortably win the final race of the GIAAC’s Winter Handicap League, a 2.8 Mile cross country race held at Pembroke.

After passing early leader Sue Down in the opening half of the race Mourant never looked in danger of being caught and came home nearly three quarters of a minute clear of Phil Touzeau.

Terry Greening’s solid sixth place was enough to take the overall series title from Eric Le Breton. Le Breton started fast in the knowledge that he needed to put at least 9 runners between himself and Greening. His brave run earned him a good fourth place but Greening managed to hold him to two places and thus took the title by 7 points.

Third placed Steve Dawes is likely to be in the selectors minds when the teams are considered for the coming Hampshire County Championships. In less than 6 weeks of competitive racing Dawes has improved dramatically and Sundays race saw him clock the fastest time of the day, just one second faster than Colin Ozanne who, after injury problems, is also back to his best.
