New father Alan soon disappears out of sight

Although the re-appearance of several of the island’s runners for the three mile race from L’Ancresse to Bulwer Avenue made for welcome news, it was the performance of Alan Rowe that inevitably grabbed the headline.

Ten days into fatherhood for the second time, the former Brighton man set off as if he’s seen a bucketful of dirty nappies, disappearing out of sight before most of the other 34 runners had reached the bus terminus. Going through the first mile mark at Bordeaux, he was already 45 seconds ahead of Mike Doyle and Tom Oliver. With a head wind to contend with for much of the second half of the race, Rowe slowed slightly, but still averaged an impressive 12mph to clock 14min. 59 sec.

Two minutes behind Mike Doyle got the better of Tom Oliver for second place, while Val Phillips, apparently fully recovered from the previous week’s cliff path race, enjoyed a similar time gap over Tracey Queripel in the women’s category (ninth overall in 18.53). Alison Jefferies was third and with the women’s section looking particularly strong, women runners filled 30% of the field.
