Despres shows his mettle on the cliffs
Guernsey Press Monday 20th September

Nick Despres secured his third successive GIAAC victory as he virtually led from start to finish to win yesterday’s 15-mile Havelet to Pleinmont cliff path race. Val Phillips took 15 minutes off her previous best for the strength-sapping course to take the women’s title. Paul Ingrouille, who has won the famous ‘tomato’ trophy more times than anyone else, was never able to get on terms with Despres, making his debut appearance at this event.

In fact, at Jerbourg, scene of Despres’ record-breaking run in August, Ingrouille was already half a minute in arrears. At this stage, Chris de la Mare had a slight advantage over Phillips, with Caroline Wickham hot on their trail. At Icart, Ingrouille seemed to have got into his rhythm, and appeared to be closing the gap. However at the Petit Bot halfway point, Despres went through with nearly a minute advantage in 56min. 52 sec. Phillips had overtaken her training partner to be 40 sec. clear in 71.03.

Despite the recurrence of a niggling foot problem, Despres managed to keep going to cross the ‘fairy-ring’ finishing line in 1 hour 47min. 8sec., exactly two minutes ahead of Ingrouille. Mike Yarnall, not a lover of cliff racing, was a distant third. Phillips comfortably broke the two and a half hour barrier for the first time with 2hrs 18min.4sec., while Chris de la Mare added yet another personal best to her collection with 2.21.14. Caroline Wickham was not far behind in third with 2.26.56.
