Mike’s efforts extinguished

CIBC’s Mike Yarnall was the quickest runner on show in the annual GIAAC Inter-Firm cross-country relay at L’Ancresse. The Island Games half marathon runner took just 6 min. 6 sec. to complete the mile and a quarter lap of the common.

Yarnall led on the first leg but could only stand back and watch as his team were overtaken by three teams to finish in fourth. Steve Wilkes put the Fire Brigade ahead on the second leg and built up a lead that was extended to one and a half minutes by the end. Nick Marley ran the last leg and brought the Firemen home in 33 min 26 sec. to complete an Inter-Firm relay double after their success in the road race in June.

Royal Bank of Canada came home second thanks to a quick second leg by Richard Saunders who had the strength to run a second time. With 20 seconds to make up on the last lap Saunders ran almost a minute quicker on his second leg than on his first. Stepping in for an absent team-mate on the first leg Saunders initially clocked 7-17. He then raced around in 6-21 as he completed the anchor leg. That second fastest time of the day gave RBC the runners-up spot, half a minute ahead of the Beau Sejour team whose anchor runner, Tony Clarkson, overtook CIBC and Barings on the final leg.

Quickest woman of the day was race organiser Caroline Wickham who finished in 7-21 helping BDO/BGL Reads to victory in the women’s competition. In all 14 men’s, three women’s and four mixed teams competed in the five-man event. Health Services won the mixed title with David Mahy running their first and quickest leg, but it was those Firemen who again proved that they are the fittest bunch of workers on the island.
