MILESTONES RACE
(LES ADAMS TO MORLEY CHAPEL - 6 Miles)
SUNDAY 24TH OCTOBER 1999
Mike bows out on a high
Bristol-bound Mike Yarnall capped off his Guernsey running career with a comfortable win in the GIAAC Milestones race.
Yarnall has recently been turning in some of his finest performances of his career and won this annual six mile event by almost three minutes. Making his debut in this event, Yarnall attacked the initial two-mile climb from Les Adams Chapel. By St Peters village he had opened up a minute lead over Tom Oliver and newcomer Dave Hampson. Out of sight by the Forest Road, the Island Games half marathon runner extended his lead and crossed the finish line in 34 minutes 46 seconds.
Mike Doyle made a strong recovery after a slow start and managed to take second place over 30 seconds ahead of Oliver in third. Tracey Queripel kept pace with many of her more experienced male counterparts and is beginning to emerge as one of the leading women in the resurgence of local women. She finished strongly in 15th in a time of 42-36 but was the first woman home, four minutes ahead of Shanine Wray, Caroline Creed finished in third in 47-18.
In the Exmoor Stagger in Somerset, J.P. Mace made the best of the torrential weather conditions in the all-terrain Exmoor Stagger to finish ahead of his fellow Sarnians in 2 hours 10 minutes 25 seconds. Much of the 14 mile course was on high ground where competitors were exposed to strong winds but nevertheless 19 runners from Guernsey made it round. Val Phillips and Chris de la Mare reaped the benefit of their cliff-path racing and training and finished 3rd and 4th in the womens section.
