GIAAC 10 Mile Road Race Championship
(2 X Specsavers loop)
SUNDAY 21st NOVEMBER 1999

Quality runs in the cold

With temperatures down to below four degrees for the 10 mile road race, incorporating the GIAAC’s 10 mile championships, performances were, nevertheless, of a consistently high standard. None more so than those of Alan Rowe and Penny Buckingham who turned in first class displays to claim the senior titles.

As the 45 entrants left the Specsavers’ site on the first five mile lap, Mike Doyle’s eager start meant that he was already 20 metres ahead as they headed for Les Prevosts. Rowe and Paul Ingrouille began more cautiously and by St Saviour’s Church were the ones dictating the pace. As they approached the Longfrie, though, Rowe had already started to stride away. By the start of the second lap Rowe was disappearing into the distance, eventually coming home over three minutes ahead in 55 minutes 55 seconds.

Despite competing in the Opta Fitness Challenge 2000 metres indoor row earlier in the morning, as had several others in the race, Ingrouille was a comfortable runner up. Nevertheless, the battle for third that developed in the latter half of the race, between Doyle and Mark Anthony, brought him back into their sights. Doyle never gave in but paid for his early exertions, as Anthony claimed the bronze medal spot. Both, however, went under the hour barrier.

Although Penny Buckingham won the women’s event by nearly two minutes, running almost three minutes quicker than last year, it was only as she approached the four mile mark, going through the road-works along the Farras Road, that she shook off the attentions of Tracey Queripel. The latter’s inspired run again raised a few eyebrows, as she recorded an exceptional 68-16 as against Buckingham’s 66-38. Queripel is improving by the week and is a real find for the club.

The veteran titles went to Pete Wickins (Over 40s) and Tom Oliver (Over 50s), who knocked over a minute off his best 10 mile time of the previous year. Chris De La Mare (Over 40s) and Caroline Wickham (Over 35s) took the women’s equivalents.
