5Km ROAD RACE - VALE CHURCH to NORTHSIDE
SUNDAY 14th NOVEMBER 1999
Mark snaps the elastic
After a see-saw of a race in which Mike Doyle and Mark Anthony alternated the lead no fewer than six times, Anthony broke clear to claim the GIAAC five kilometre road race from the Vale Church to North Side, St Sampsons.
From the start Doyle demonstrated he meant business, bursting to the front of the 50-strong field. Anthony soon took up the chase and by Pembroke crossroads had assumed the lead. The pair seemed to be joined together by elastic, for as soon as one gained a five metre advantage, the gap didnt increase and then the other appeared to be catapulted back to the front. Around Bordeaux though Anthony cut loose to come home 13 seconds clear in 17 minutes 26 seconds.
In third place for the entire race Pete Wickins, on the road to recovery after a lengthy spell out injured, just avoided getting caught by a group of six headed by Geoff King. Likewise, leading woman Caroline Wickham maintained a substantial distance from Tracey Queripel, while Chris de la Mare found herself struggling with the shorter distance and coming in third woman.
Despite the strong head-wind that runners had to contend with for most of the race, times were again very respectable, most noticeably that of Mark Mercier, who added maximum points to his Under 13 championship tally. The promising 11 year old battled it out with his senior counterparts for a top 20 place, and was just outside 20 minutes for the three mile course.
Kylie Robilliard was top Under 13 girl. Aaron Lamb wont he Under 9s 1,000 metre race over the footpaths around Grand Havre, but Daniel Carre closed to within one second with a late flourish. Sarah Mercier also finished strongly to take third. James Bodkin was a comfortable winner of the Under 11s event over two laps of the same cours, with Tony Brehaut the runner-up.
