SARNIAN ROOFING HANDICAP SERIES
RACE 2- VAZON CIRCUIT 4 1/2 miles
SUNDAY 7th NOVEMBER 1999

Hills and headwinds little handicap
to debutant Shirley

In her first GIAAC race Shirley Gaudion did what every runner dreams of – led from start to finish. The race in question, though, was the second of the club’s winter handicap series, and she did have the luxury, along with Michelle Drew and Leslie Brown, of starting off from scratch. However with a head wind to cope with for the first and last miles, not to mention the cruel climb from Kings Mills to St George’s mid race, the 4.5 mile event soon ruins the comfort of such luxuries.

With the prospect of the 37 other runners in the field bearing down on them, Gaudion and Drew worked together to maintain a good pace and avoid the stampede, Gaudion getting back to the Vazon finish time slightly ahead in 38 min 27 sec. In comparative isolation for most of the race, Sylvia Jouhning got within striking distance of the leading pair, but finished less than half a minute behind in third.

Fourth placed John Dedman added a fine performance to his recent swimming exploits, one of 10 to go under 29 minutes, with a further three also breaking the half hour barrier. Fastest woman of the day, Tracey Queripel, was just outside that, while Carl Thompson showed that the couple of years he has spent concentrating on cycling has not affected his running ability, outdoing Mike Doyle in the fastest man stakes with 25.54.

David Butler, the winner of the Under nine Colts’ section handicap race over 1,000m of the Vazon headland, also went off from scratch, but needed to muster a final sprint to hold off Hannah Lamb. Only three seconds separated the first three (James Brehaut was third in 5.58) and all 14 finished within 23 seconds! Simon Touzeau made up good ground in the Under 11 1,000m race but with Gemma Mauger and James Bodkin running excellent races, had too much to do to catch them. Kylie Robilliard was the winner of the Under 13 girls 2,000m event.
