Sarnian Roofing GIAAC Handicap Series:
Grande Rocque to Vale Church 5km
19 December 1999
Newcomers Fleet of Foot
Newcomer Helen Tucker caught the handicapper on the hop when she covered the 5k course from Grandes Rocques to the Vale Church in a spritely 23 minutes, 6 seconds. Her fine run into the teeth of a bitterly cold north-easterly resulted in a comfortable win by more than 2 minutes from another new face, Gary Allen.
Of the club members in the 42 strong field, arguably the run of the day came from Debbie Doherty. Starting from a 5 minute, 50 second handicap the tall blonde strode past runner after runner to take third in the second fastest run by a woman and only 30 seconds slower than the series leader, the improving Tracey Queripel.
Quickest of the men was Mark Anthony who romped around in just 17 minutes 25 seconds to make up 29 places from his spot at the back of the field.
With most sports putting their feet up for the holiday period the runners are busier than everyone with traditional runs on Boxing Day and New Years Day, plus a special challenge match with the Guernsey Velo Club cyclists on Tuesday 28 at Fauxquets Valley. The idea is simple enough that the runners will brave the mud on their feet while the cyclists attempt to peddle their way through it and quicker than the runners. The Boxing Day and New Years Day (a handicap) runs are both over the 4.75 mile full cross country course at Pembroke, starting at 11.00 a.m. The start and finish is underneath Rocque Balan.
