Keith Falla Memorial 4 3/4 mile Cross Country Race - Saturday 3rd April 1999

Weather: Overcast with moderate to fresh south westerly wind, 14 degrees celcius.

GB International Zara Hyde-Peters (Havant AC) stamped her authority on the Ladies race with a fast start to the Keith Falla Memorial Cross Country opening up a 25 second lead over chasing duo Kathy Bailey and Kate Jenrick by the 1 mile mark at the climb up Roque Ballan. Likewise Paul Green had sailed through the same point with 10 seconds in hand over Tim Beer and Chris Thompson closely followed by the first Guernsey athlete Lee Merrien inside the first ten.

Rounding the coastal path approaching Pembroke Bay Paul Green's lead at two miles was up to 16 seconds with Chris Thompson well clear in second with Havant's Mike Hyde-Peters and Pete Lucas battling for third position a further 24 seconds behind. Zara Hyde-Peters lead had stretched to 41 seconds whilst Kathy Bailey had pulled clear of Kate Jenrick with Estle Viljoen holding fourth spot 9 seconds behind Jenrick.

Coming off the Chouet headland with a little under a mile to go Green's lead was approaching 40 seconds over Thompson whilst Pete Boxshall (Kent AC) held third place fourteen seconds in arrears. In the race for first local Paul Ingrouille had caught the aspiring Lee Merrien in a knot of runners chasing 6th place with the previous day's first local Mike Yarnell well out of the hunt for the honour.

Zara Hyde-Peters lead was maintained at 42 seconds and the significant change of the latter part of the race was Amanda Purser overhauling Viljoen and moving up into 4th place behind Bailey and Jenrick. These positions were held to the finish and with both Bailey and Hyde-Peters expected to miss the Half Marathon as they prepare for International duties next weekend this crucially levelled the points tally of Jenrick and Purser.

The mens top three remained unchanged at the finish and Lee Merrien prevailed over Paul Ingrouille by 6 seconds to finish first local in 6th and 8th places respectively.
