Introducing u13+ Where a race is denoted as U13+ it is open, either as training run for the older juniors or as a fun run for parents starting at either the same time or shortly after the under 13 children. The idea here is that it is a run for novice runners who might be happy to jog round the course for a bit of exercise, timed or otherwise. Mud and Fun RunThe Saffery Champness Mud and Fun Run is on Sat 18th Feb at 2pm at the Rugby Club Hampshire Cross Country ChampionshipsHighlights were golds for Lee Merrien (Senior Men) and Katie Rowe (u15 Girls), Louise Perrio's bronze plus leading the ladies to a team victory. We look forward to seeing you at the awards night to
celebrate a great year of success and great performances. Awards Night Committee 2011 Power of 10 UK RankingsThe announcement of the top 100 rankings for the power of 10 website includes 60 entries from 26 athletes for GIAAC. We also were represented in nearly 30 track and field disciplines. Linked here is the full list of entries.
We had 10 entries in the top 10. Lee’s second place in the marathon just being pipped by Tom Druce being the fastest athlete on the website over 300 meters. Also notable was Kylie Robilliard’s two entries at 14th in the 60m hurdles and 12th in the 100m hurdles and special mention should be made of Katie Rowe’s 15th ranking in the 1500m under 15 and Josh Cowdrey’s 8th place in the under 17 high jump.
It’s also pleasing to see that we have six athletes ranked in the top 100 for all-time performances. Lee Merrien, Kylie Robilliard, Tom Druce, Louise Perrio and Sarah Mercier (in the steeplechase!) and Dale Garland are all included in the all-timers list. Dale is included for the 400m and is our highest raked athlete at 22nd in the 400m hurdles.
Louise Perrio is the GIAAC athlete who is mentioned most frequently with seven entries ranging from 2000m steeplechase to 10k just ahead of Dale and Sarah Mercier with six entries. Zoe Fitch is our junior with most mentions featuring in the rankings for the under 15’s triple jump, hammer and javelin.
Of course the power of 10 entries is a rough guide to how the club’s performances compare with other clubs - some events are much more competitive than others and, especially for the age rankings, performance will be shaped by factors such as how old you are nevertheless 60 entries is a pleasing outcome for all the hard work in 2011. In our development plan we have identified as one of our goals – ‘We will increase the number of athletes who feature in the top 100 of the Power of 10 Athletics Website’ So let’s see if 2012 can see even more entries across all sections of the club. Yours in sport, Alun Williams New Year's Day Handicap January 1st - 11am - Fancy Dress Optional !Results here. After drying out the results sheets in a PB here are the results of the rather soggy NY day run. Good return by Colette Andrews who was first across the line & also good to see so many turning up in fancy dress with Warwick Helps(Superman), Terry Greening(Bananaman) and Indian duo Cath Coutanche and Sarah Nicholls taking the prizes. Special mention must go to the Pink Ladies (Sara Marley, Jess Gallienne & Eleanor "Indy" Gallagher). There is some discussion currently going on as to whether the runner in 50th place was Alun Williams dressed as Tom Druce….. or Tom Druce dressed as Alun Williams. Thanks must go out to helpers on day including Course Markers Louise, Dave Cros & Toby Grice. Finish Line Team Paul Frank, Sarah Mercier, Belinda Doyle, Ian Merrien and Marshalls Nick Marley, Michael Way and Ian Garner. Traditional Boxing Day XC - Mon 26th December 11amFast time (23:15) by Lee Merrien whilst Louise Perrio smashes her PB and Guernsey Ladies Best. Results here. Club development plan and Appointment of full-time Athletics Development OfficerAs many of you know in recent months the
club has spent much time reflecting on its strengths and areas for
development. The result is ‘Here we go…Guernsey Athletics to December
2013 , the GIAAC development plan (copy

to build on those strengths and to ensure that we have the capacity to
build on our success. The key features of the plan include the following:

This is to avoid the annual Santa run. Visit of Christine BenningMany thanks to all of those of you who met with
Christine Benning , our Contact with England Athletics. Christine is an
ex-olympic athlete with a wealth of knowledge and expertise so she knows
when a club is moving in the right direction and I’m pleased to report that
she was rightly impressed with the club, its achievements and ambitions. She
thoroughly enjoyed her time at a Tuesday evening club session and has made
very positive comments about the dedication of athletes and coaches alike.
Following discussions with Christine and colleagues from the Guernsey Sports
Commission we have revised our development plan which we now hope to publish
early next week. Again, many thanks, Alun Virgin London Marathon entry 2012 Every year the club is allocated entries to the London
Marathon. Regrettably this year the Club has only received one entry as the
allocation process has changed and is now based on the number of entries
that register with England athletics - ordinarily this is only those
who compete off-island so the number is significantly less than how they
used to assess our allocation. We have made clear our disappointment to the organisers
- it’s especially ironic as Lee Merrien is currently the holder of the
coveted Jim Peters Trophy which is presented to the first British runner. As always any club runners who have been rejected for
the London Marathon and would like to be considered for the club entry can
be considered for the place. Please can I be contacted before the race on
January 1st when we will do a draw to select the lucky entry. Guernsey Sports Commission awards

Improvements at Footes Lane You will be aware that Footes Lane is
undergoing improvement at the moment. For athletics we will see two significant
developments: A strength & conditioning centre is being
built trackside beside the finishing line. The total size of the centre is
approx 115 square metres and will include equipment such as olympic bars and
platforms, racks for squats and bench press, dumbbell set, and various cardio
equipment. The centre will be accessible for a selection of our senior athletes
as well as other selected sportsmen and women – we will provide more details in
a few months but the building should be finished by December with the equipment
being fitted in January / February. There will also be some additional seating
above the centre The athletics club will have a club room
at the far end of the Garenne Stand. The rugby club will be fitting out a
new bar and clubroom at the front of the stand and the athletics club will be
relocating to the far end of the stand – in the Bucktrouts room. We are
currently working out the design but features that are being considered will
include: Relocating the trophy cabinet; designing
a wall of fame that commemorates the club’s history and celebrates some of the
individuals who have helped to shape Guernsey athletics; improving the records
display; establishing a digital display area beside a notice board where we can
include a rolling montage of current athletes.
The building works should start soon with
the hope that all works will be completed before the start of the track
season 2012.The athletics club room should be finished sometime before that May
2012 We would really appreciate ideas and
contributions from all sections of the club and we are particularly seeking some
individuals who are keen to share ideas on design.
If you want to help please contact Alun
Williams Thank you to all those that attended & helped with the Fun Day. For
those who took part in the relay marathon we managed to clock up 1032 laps which
is just over 10 marathons in three hours so well done! The PFM multi event will take place on Thurdsay 22nd & Friday 23rd September
at the track starting at 6pm borth nights. It will be a fun end of the
season competition with a BBQ to finish on Friday. Cost is £2 to enter of
£5 for family and friends for the BBQ. Entry form

the usual hills & sprints, and on Thursdays at North beach for a steady run of
about 40 to 60 mins. Contact JP Mace for more info

As
documented the Jersey Spartans barely turned out at senior level and Guernsey
returned from FB Fields having retained the Burton and Le Riche Trophies with a
near white wash. The
junior competition was fiercer but Guernsey edged every age group (U11, U13, U15
& U17) - a collective well done. Any
criticism of the Jersey effort can not be levelled at the Caesarean officials
who turned out to make the event happen. Including (but not limited to) Chris
Dorey, Roy McCarthy, Jim Evans, Carole Derrien, Hanna Gothard & Alan Harrison. The
Guernsey coaches and officials who made it work are too numerous to mention. Full

the posties…. Just Guernsey Post were the winners of the Collins Stewart
annual inter-firms team relay held on the streets of St Peter Port last
night. Guernsey Post had been regular winners of the relay over the past
five years but this year’s race saw a close finish as they were chased all
the way by second-paced Butterfield Bolts. Sam Dowding, the third leg runner
for the Guernsey Post turned the race around with an impressive time of 4
minutes 52 seconds which enabled Jimmy De Garis to anchor the team to a ten
second victory. The third team home was the winning mixed team, KPMG A
whose last leg runner was Sarah Mercier who came home in the fastest ladies
time of 5 minutes 17 seconds. Fellow Island Games Competitor Ben Wilen was
the fastest male runner as he completed the mile course in a time of 4
minutes 51 seconds. The first all ladies team was JP’s running group who
averaged just over 7 minute miles. 26 teams competed in the event which meant that more
than 100 athletes competed over the hilly course. It is impressive that 2/3
of the athletes cam home in under 7 minutes. The event is a fundraiser for Guernsey Athletics club
and, in particular, to support athletes who are aspiring to represent the
island at the 2013 games in Bermuda. For more information - Contact Alun Williams on

if you are interested. Please make every effort to attend & support your club. On Tuesday night the sinks in the toilets behind the commentary
box in the Garenne Stand were blocked and the taps were intentionally turned on.
This resulted in a flood that has caused extensive damage to the ground floor at
the Garenne Stand including the athletics office. The electric circuits have
been damaged and it will be necessary to replace carpets and fittings. Keep up to date with all the action. Team Blog :

Island Games Athletics Team 7.30pm onwards on Wednesday 6th July at Hojo’s
Restaurant Over the next few days we will all be watching with great
interest to see how our athletics team fare in the Isle of Wight at the Nat West
Island Games. This is our largest ever team of 31 competitors and they are a
healthy mix of well-established international competitors and younger athletes
with great potential.
This year’s Island Games is predicted to be the highest
quality that we have ever experienced but we have great hopes of seeing our
athletes return with improved personal bests, medal performances and an
enjoyable experience.
We are very aware that our team’s success will be a result
of individual’s efforts and dedication. However we also know that those
achievements would not have happened without the contribution of many
supporters. These include coaches, officials, parents and sponsors. Put simply, many of the team would not be competing without
the support of the whole club. In recent months the GIAAC has worked hard to
sustain development squads, send teams to athletics matches and to organise
quality events locally. The result of this support has meant that our club can
be proud of our success and we can be confident that we will continue to prosper
in the future. In recognition of your support we would like to invite club
members to a small celebration of our island Games team on their return. We
will be meeting at Hojo’s restaurant at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6th July and you
would be very welcome to attend. Yours in Sport Alun Williams President of GIAAC Saturday 30 July to Friday 5 August Entries are now being accepted for this year's challenge.

the afternoon on Saturday or Sunday. Lee can be contacted on: (leegarland@cwgsy.net,
07781102751). We need a full team of volunteers for the weekend to run
smoothly! This is a very special thanks to everyone who was involved in the KPMG Easter
Festival 2011. It was our 30th festival and it really was one of the very
best. The lovely weather helped but that is only part of the story.
The event is exemplary in its organisation with so many club members playing
their part. The event works for everyone. Our elite athletes really
thrive on the challenge of top quality competition - well done the likes of
Steve Dawes, Colin Jeffreys, Nikki Neale for being there or thereabouts
throughout all four races - right through to the likes of, well me - who was
dead chuffed to finish 97th in the half marathon. We also had a great
series of colts/junior races. I can't really thank everyone for their efforts but Ingy does deserve a
very special mention. He oversaw meticulour planning that made the series
go so smoothly. We have a really busy May and June and the Easter Festival has set us off to
a really good start. Yours in sport, Alun Williams Photo Albums have been posted to the club's Flickr site

Mick Woods, the top coach from Aldershot & Farnham and a
couple of his athletes including Steph Twell, has offered to run a strength &
conditioning session next Tuesday when we have the normal athletics session.
The session is open to all athletes from juniors to seniors. It's been a momentous week for Guernsey athletics - not
only was Lee Merrien the first Brit home in the London Marathon but also the
Club has acquired a brand new urn so that we can make all sorts of hot drinks at
our crosscountry events and at Footes Lane! The urn will make its debut at
the Colts crosscountry race on Friday and will be available for use on Saturday
and Sunday a the Easter Festival. Not only will the urn make life much
more bearable as we are shivering away at the full course but it gives us a
chance to raise money for the club. For that reason can we ask members to
bring along cakes that we can sell at teh races. If you can provide any
please may we receive them on Thursday evening - please leave them in the
Garenne Stand. Many thanks, Alun Williams. Come and support your club raising money for the Island
Games & test your brain. Details
here. We have a very busy time ahead of us over the next few
weeks. Not only do we have the Easter Festival, Liberation day race and the June
Half marathon but we also have a number of track and field events and
competitions. First up is the revised CI championships on the weekend of
May 7th /8th. The changes to the format have been made so
that more athletes can benefit from quality athletics. We are pleased to
enclose the entry forms
here so get those
filled out as soon as possible so that we can have a weekend of really exciting
athletics. We also have the Hampshire track and field championships the
week after. Athletes, we must know your details as soon as possible so that
we can make flight and accommodation bookings Over the next few weeks we will be contacting athletes and
their families and officials to help us make the events go smoothly. Please
volunteer your services! Yours in sport, Alun Williams The entry forms and accreditation requirements for everyone
attending the Island Games have been circulated and need to be completed and
returned to Alun Williams by Tuesday 19th April. The athletes squad have
been sent details but if you wish to be an 'official' spectator you should also
complete the accreditation details. Copies will be available at the track
from Thursday or contact Alun Williams on tel: 726604 for details. Thanks
Alun Williams. Hi everyone. This is a quick note to
let all club members know that Dale Garland will be resigning from his post as
Development Officer over the next few weeks. Dale has taken up a full-time post
elsewhere and since he wishes to focus on his athletics career and to continue
to provide coaching support for some of our most promising athletes he will have
to relinquish the Development Officer duties. The GIAAC has been very fortunate
to have the support of excellent Development Officers. Terry Bates, Lee Merrien
and Dale have all brought qualities to the role that have been the key elements
in bringing the club to its current level of success across all sectors. Dale
has been the Development Officer since 2008 and as we all can see, week in, week
out he has been a real inspiration to the club with his commitment and support.
I am really pleased that Dale will continue to be a presence at the track not
only as an athlete but as he continues to coach athletes. Development and how we manage it is
essential to the well-being of the club. For that reason we need to give some
thought to how we replace Dale. In the long-term we would want to speak to
all sectors of the club about their needs and plans. The committee has also
produced a three year plan which will shape the future of the club. We therefore
need to allow ourselves a period of reflection to work out how to use the
resources of a Development Officer to make all these plans happen.
For this reason the committee has
resolved to make the following arrangements: A permanent appointment will be made
after the Island Games to allow some time to reflect on our requirements. In the short-term Lee Garland has
agreed to cover the Development Officer post. Lee's main responsibilities, in
the first instance will be: To organise: the Channel Island
Championships; the Inter-trust championship; the summer programme of races. We are very fortunate to be able to
work with someone of the calibre of Lee. Lee has been one of our most consistent
performers for over two decades, winning his first of four Island Games Gold
Medals in Gibraltar in 1995 so he has an extensive, first –hand knowledge of
athletics. He has also been involved in officiating, coaching and is one of the
club stalwarts who is happy to volunteer for all manner of chores. Please bear
in mind that Lee will only be working for 10-12 hours per week so we all need to
help out as required. Basically, if he asks you do to something please be prompt
in responding and preferably say yes! Don't forget that Zoe will continue
with her role as club administrator - in particular supporting the Easter
Festival and organising the visit to the Hampshire Track & Field championships.
Yours in sport, Alun Williams Well done to all our club athletes who were part of the victorious junior
schools cross-country interinsula team at the weekend. Not only did we
have three individual winners in Alex Rowe, Sam Culverwell and Rebecca Toll but
we had a host of gutsy performaces that gained us valuable points.
Particular mention to our team of year 6 girls - Rebecca Toll, Kira Avery, Sara
Marley, Renee Hubert and Amy Sharpe who turned the match around by taking 5 of
the top 6 places. For results see

I am pleased to attach the president’s report and the
Treasurer’s report which were presented and accepted at the Club’s AGM
yesterday. The reports reflect the club’s significant achievements over the
past year. They also applaud the efforts of so many club members to ensure the
club’s continued success and growth. At the meeting we did highlight some of the
challenges to the club and I have included below a pertinent section of the
report Although there are
numerous successes we are not complacent and we are aware of the challenges we
face. Fortunately most of those challenges are a product of our success. The
club is striving to do more and more and to a higher level each year. To meet
the expectations that we have created we need to put in place the following:
·
The club is fortunate to have a committee that loves athletics. Alongside
our professional staff Zoe and Dale, we are committed to drive the club forward.
To do this we do need to increase the numbers of people who make things happen.
In particular we need to ensure that more people help to organise events. In
many ways the two most important events for the club in 2011 will be the
officials course that we hope to hold in the spring and the coaching course in
the summer. We need to increase the numbers of coaches and officials to ensure
that we can fulfil our commitments
·
Our finance report reads well – not least because of the tireless efforts
of Geoff and his team to husband our resources effectively - but if we are to
continue to grow the efficient use of resources will be key. In particular we
need to be adept in raising funds for the Bermuda island Games in 2013. We have
a young team attending the 2011 island games. If everything goes according to
plan they will be in peak condition for Bermuda in 2013 – the only issue will
the cost. The individual athletes will be the main benefactors and we
really want to see them involved in doing their bit to raise funds.
·
We are introducing a number of innovations to our track and field
programme this year, so that we can provide local athletes with quality
opposition throughout the season. The revised inter-insular format; increased
off-island races and a series of quality race nights will all work if we
give them our full backing We now have firm dates for the officials
training courses to which we refer in the report. Those dates are: Saturday 12th / Sunday 13th March
Officials course Saturday 20 August / Sunday 21 August - The coaching courses (Coaching assistant & Athletics
coach) with Athletics coach follow up days Saturday 17th
September & Saturday 10th December. Please email zoe at

Sadly, at
Jersey's request we have had to postpone this season's inter-insular for both
seniors and juniors. Jersey have experienced a combination of problems relating
to flight costs and athlete commitment.
Speaking for
Jersey Spartans, Dave Woodsford was most apologetic in making this request.
It is hoped to
reschedule the event for a suitable date in February or March.

Any questions email club@guernseyathletics.org.gg A big Thankyou! After a few hectic weeks down at the track an on the road
this is a quick note to thank of all of our helpers for making the events that
we have held so far this summer so successful. Over the past week we have witnessed an exciting RG Falla/
Smokebusters junior schools athletics championships, a top-quality intertrust
meeting and a record-breaking Spearpoint half marathon. Over 800 competitors took part in the events. Quite rightly all the focus will be on the performance of
our athletes:
·
From
11 year old Elfie Penney winning the best overall athlete at the schools
championships to Hywel, Dale, Tom, Nathan and Ross mixing it with the best over
400m
From Lee Merrien romping to victory in the half marathon to the
impressive, record-breaking performance of the girls under 17 4X100 relay team They all deserve our praise and admiration. But so do all the
volunteers and helpers who give up so much of their time to ensure events go off
successfully and allow for our athletes to flourish. As always there are too many to mention but they really are
the backbone of the club. On Saturday I was fortunate to introduce Jason Gardiner to
GIAAC athletes and helpers. It was clear that he was impressed with the club and
its achievements. He consistently commented on how the success of the club was
shaped by quality and quantity of the coach and volunteer support. So again, many thanks for all your help. We greatly
appreciate the support and here’s to continuing our great summer with even more
quality events . Yours in sport Alun Williams
Lee Merrien decimates field, Defending Champ Bronwyn
McNeill-Rogers defeats Island Games HM Champ Martine Scholes.
Separated from the main results (he started at a different time) is Andree Reece-Sheerin's new wheelchair record of 82 minutes 22 seconds. Taking 4 minutes off his own previous record for the course. Results posted here.
As we come up to the busiest part of the athletics season we would greatly
appreciate some support in helping us ensure that our athletics events are
really high quality.
Over the next few weeks we will be hosting the following events:
The Smokebusters/ RG Falla junior School championships - Wednesday 16th June
The Intertrust Golden Series - Saturday 19th June
The Spearpoint Father's day1/2 marathon amd street mile - Sunday 20th June
We need help in all sorts of areas - particularly marshalls/officials,
volunteers to serve teas/coffees and food.
In the longer term we are looking for someone to help us with junior records and
to help athletes record and track their achievements and we always need coaches/
helpers at the track. If you have run the London Marathon in the last 10 years
you will automatically appear in this register. by visiting
www.aubreybooks.com, entrants have the
opportunity to enhance their entry by submitting personal accounts of their
London Marathon experience, mentioning their chosen charity and even uploading
photographs from the race. Sample is
here. Have a look at photos of our fantastic weekend in Hampshire.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/45134931@N06/sets/72157623954374619/ Please check out the new fixture list for 2010
here. Please note - the Cross Country League & Inter Insular Fixtures from Oct
onwards are provisional at the current time & will be confirmed by Sept. We are glad to report that Gordon Mercier is recovering
after being taken ill after the Easter Ferstival. Gordon had a minor
operation in St Thomas's hospital last week. He is now on the mend and we
hope to se him down at the track in the near future. In Gordon's absence
Pete Wickins and Sarah Mercier have been running the endurance sessions but it's
just not the same. Our best wishes to Gordon & Family. Many of you willknow that Charlie Cottam has stepped down
as a club coach. Charlie has been involved with the club for nearly thirty
years and has been instrumental in club developments and suporting 100's of
young athletes. We will be hosting an endurance evening on Thursday 10th
June - more details about the festival next week. During the evening we
will be making a presentation to Charlie to thank him for all his hard work so,
hopefully, as many of Charlie's athletes as possible, can come along. So was Lee's debut marathon the greatest Guernsey athletics
performance ever? No doubt the debate about that will go on and on but the
GIAAC wants to mark such a tremendous achievement and we have decided to
celebrate the event with a reception immediately after the Leberation Day race
which starts at 11am. We will be gathering for a drink at the Muse Cafe -
on the old Savoy Hotel site at the end of the race at about midday.
Coincidentally the 2010 race will mark the seventh decade in which the
Liberation day race has been won and we want to celebrate that landmark as well.
In particular it would be great if we could get together as many winners of the
race as possible. Press & TV Coverage Channel TV

The GIAAC is sad to report the death, at the age of 49, of
one of Guernsey’s leading women distance Runners. Val (Phillips for much of her
running career) regularly represented the club and island from the mid 1980’s
onwards at cross country, track and road running events. Longer endurance events
were her real forte and she gained her first of many Island Games medals in the
Guernsey games of 1987, she added to this with more individual and team medals
in 1997 and 1999. Val returned from serious illness in typically resolute
fashion to compete in Guernsey’s next games in 2003 and will be remembered as a
determined individual . Our thoughts go out to her husband Paul and son Sam. League positions have now been posted
here. Results of the second race are posted here. Event Hoodies & T shirts featuring the above series logo on the chest will be some of the prizes awarded to
division winning athletes, if you would like to purchase a T shirt (Grey or white £15.00) or grey hoodie (£22.00)then email the club and we will make the necessary
arrangements to secure one for you. Ladies T shirts can be the fitted Skinni fit brand or regular - please specify. This winter's XC Series, sponsored by information technology firm Fusion Systems, starts on Saturday 17th
October at Delancey Park ( 2:00pm start ). As usual the series of 5 races will be
split into Division's after the second race, enabling athletes of differing
abilities to battle out for places in their own competition. The junior
and colts section of the club are also catered for with u17's, u15's & u13's
competing in the same races albeit off shorter distances. u11's, u9's & u
