JP's summer training schedule for our endurance runners is here.
On Tuesday we will be having a
small celebration to announce a number of GIAAC developments and to celebrate
some achievements:
·
We will be launching our 2012 records and
statistics book. The booklet has been excellently produced by Rob and Mike
Batiste and, as always, it’s a great read. Seven senior island records were
broken in 2012 so congratulations to Tom Druce (100m), Lee Merrien (Marathon and
½ Marathon), Sarah Mercier (1500m)and a special mention to Louise Perrio who
broke 3000m, 5000m and ½ marathon records.
·
We will be unveiling our new coaching structure
which will be of benefit to every club athlete from colt to super vet
·
We will be celebrating Jon Le Masurier, a local
boy who went on be one of GB’s greatest coaches and who, in 2010, was inducted
in UK athletics hall of fame – plus celebrating some other local GB
internationals
It’s a busy training night so we will be no more that 15
minutes but do pop in
Thanks, Alun Williams

Well done for the impressive Junior schools victory on Saturday. Guernsey won all four year 5+6 races, led home by Rhiannon Dowinton, Chris Bain, Eliza Mason, Louis Le Cheminant. Guernsey also won the Overall Team Trophy68-91 The incentive of cupcake provided by Tess Williams - as demonstrated by Amy Le Tocq obviously worked .
Katie Rowe bounced back from last week's 10th place at the Inter Counties to finish 4th in the Intermediate Girls race and earn her second England vest at next weekend's Home Countries International event in Wales.
Ed Mason was the next best Guernsey finisher - 61st in the Junior Boys, whilst in the same race Alex Rowe was unfortunate to be spiked at the start of the same race, half pulling his shoe off which he later discarded. he went on to finish 151st from 323. Danny Ray finished a solid 93rd in the Intermediate Boys.

Alun Williams, Club President has issued the following information update.
GIAAC is a busy, thriving club. We should be proud of our athletes’ achievements, successful club events and the efforts that every coach, helper and official makes to ensure that all 420+ members have a positive experience of athletics. At the club’s recent AGM there was unequivocal support for sustaining and building on current arrangements. We also received feedback on issues such as communication and how we distribute funds. Over the next few weeks we will roll out the committee’s response to those issues. In particular we have identified three key developments that we want to share with club members:
These three developments will shape the future of GIAAC for the foreseeable future. The summaries will
Of course alongside this we have ‘business as usual’ - trips away, the Easter Festival, Club 10k, Junior schools cross country. Order yourself a copy of the club’s record book, due out be the end of the month to see exactly what the club has achieved in the past year. We would welcome any comments - and, as importantly, offers of help. If you have any comments please email to Zoe, our club administrator at club@guernseyathletics.org.gg or phone me on tel: 07911 728059

Background information (PDF)
I am pleased to announce our club members of the month. Louise, Sarah and Katie – take a bow! Many of you will have watched their exploits on Saturday at the Intercounties crosscountry championships. Their performances were exceptional as Sarah and Louise were scorers in the gold medal winning Hampshire team and Katie, on the back of her 2nd place in the Souther Counties , secured a top ten finish. But it is not just for that one performance that they have been recognised. All three are role models in their commitment to the sport. They train hard, regularly compete and also are great supporters of the club. Louise and Sarah have been committee members over the past few years.
Louise Perrio - Sarah Mercier - Katie Rowe
It is especially good timing that we recognise Louise , Sarah and Katie’s efforts as last friday was International women’s day and the local Chair of the IOD, Anne Ewing discussed Guernsey role models at a seminar. These are her words:
When considering the Guernsey context to women in leadership in Guernsey – sport is an interesting case study. On a performing and participation level Guernsey is pretty much exemplary – Heather Watson. Kristina Neves and Ali Merrien are heroes and role models as much as Lee Merrien, Andy Priaulx and Ross Allen. Female participation levels are higher than elsewhere – although still not high enough. The island Games and Commonwealth representative teams have a healthy gender mix and in mixed sports such as swimming, tennis and athletics girls are valued on an equal status as boys. The GIAAC, for example ,are as proud of the achievements of Katie Rowe, Louise Perrio and Sarah Mercier as their male counterparts.
We should be proud of the efforts of all women at the GIAAC. Although we have celebrated the achievements of Katie, Lou and Sarah we are blessed with girls and women across all ages who compete on an equal level with their male counterparts.
Alun Williams - President - 12th March 2013

A NEW distance running series will give anyone and everyone the chance to beat Steve Dawes, Louise Perrio and alike. The Chertsey House Dental Practice Road Series Championship will embrace four traditional races in the GIAAC competition calendar, this coming weekend’s 10-miler on the Imperial loop, the subsequent five-mile event on 10 February, the early March 5k in the Park event and the club’s 10k championship road race on 17 March.
Each event will be run in normal fashion with first across the line the winner, but each performance will be judged on an age-graded calculation for the Chertsey House Road Series Championship points. GIAAC’s Paul Ingrouille said that the new championship will give added interest to those who are accustomed to trailing in behind the island’s elite runners. ‘It is often overlooked that the best runs on the day are achieved by veterans or super-veterans. They, too, have their aims and targets and while they may no longer be able to beat or challenge the likes of Steve and Louise in a straight race, on age-graded performance, they may just do,’ he said.
Scoring for the new series will be straightforward and that the top male and female in terms of top average percentage from two of the four races, will win. There will be cash prizes for the winners and runners-up. ‘We hope that the new championship will give an interesting twist to our late winter road programme,’ added Ingrouille.
Single lap loop from Portlet, Start time 10am, entries from 9:20am, UKAthletics licensed race, entry for non members £5.00 Details here.
The colts fixture list can be downloaded here.

Steve Dawes and Louise Perrio placed first and second respectively in the traditional Boxing Day Full Course race capping fine years for both athletes. Full results here.
Our
athletics Development officer, Steve Green, has decided to return to the UK and
we have agreed with Steve that he will leave his post over the Xmas period.
Steve joined
us in the spring, and in the few months he has been with us, he has made a
significant contribution to the development of the club.
In
particular we thank Steve for his efforts in establishing club events such as
the Intertrust Grand Prix and the Mourant Ozannes Town Mile, as well as
developing events such as the Intertrust Golden Meeting.
Steve also
worked closely with our team of coaches, and organisations such as the sports
commission, in helping to develop 'off-island' competition opportunities for
both our Junior and Senior athletes.
2012 saw a
steady growth in GIACC athletes
appearing in the top 100 of the Power of 10 rankings across a range of events
and age-groups
We also
thank Steve for pulling together the winning citation for the South East
Regional Development Club of the year award for 2012.
Steve’s love
of athletics was always evident to those that worked with him. I’m sure that he
will continue to be involved in the sport, so we will no doubt bump into him as
we compete in the UK.
On behalf of
all GIAAC club members we wish Steve well for the future.
2013 will be a busy and important year for the GIAAC. To that
end we need to ensure that we continue to develop and early in the new year we
will publish an update to our development plan – ‘Here we go…’ The plan will
clearly outline our priorities through to 2014. We are a busy, thriving club and are
fortunate that within our membership we have so many individuals with the
commitment and expertise to enable us to sustain and build upon our current
levels of success. Delivering our plan will require the involvement of many club
members – more about that in the new year.
An indication of how active we are as a club is the schedule
of events planned for the festive period. We have the boxing day run, new years
day run, colts and juniors xmas party, specialist training sessions for colts
and juniors and we are confident of a successful performance at the
Hampshire cross country championships in Early January.
Thanks to everyone for their support.
Yours in sport,
Alun Williams

on being an Elite Athlete
The Junior Endurance Team produced an excellent set of results - with wins for Katie Rowe (u15g), Alex Rowe's 2nd place led the u13boys team to a win. 6th place for Danny Ray led the u15boys to third team
and Jessie Staples excelled on her first UK race in 9th position (u13g). Of the 17 GIAAC athletes competing, 8 were given

GIAAC is pleased to welcome a team of athletes from Grantham Athletic Club in
Lincolnshire, who arrived on Sunday 28th October, and will be staying on the
Island until the 2nd of November. They will be training with the club, I am sure all at the club will
extend them a warm welcome. Fantastic turnout again despite the cold weather and biting wind. Steve Dawes matched his record from 2011 whilst Louise Perrio set a new Ladies record. Excellent Junior turnout won by Danny Ray (u15)
ahead of Ed Mason (u15), edging out Alex Rowe (u13) with Katie Rowe (u15) coming home a few seconds later. Results posted here. Just before the start of the second race of the series, a presentation was made to Hugo Bisson as the winner of the Outstanding Junior Athlete Performance for his win at Delancey Park in the u13 race.
As well as being awarded the FNB shoe bag and hat being given to all junior athletes, Hugo was presented with £25 of sports goods vouchers. The selection policy for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has now been approved by the GCGA and a copy can be downloaded

I am please to announce that the GIAAC has appointed Dave
Legg as the Commonwealth Games Team Manager for the Glasgow Commonwealth games

for three decades, in his capacity as head of PE at the Guernsey Grammar school,
has managed the Guernsey team attending the English school athletics

see the Island and enjoy what the Island has to offer. 2013 Dates: 29th March to 1st April. August’s club member of the month is Hazel Solway
GIAAC is a very active club. We have a full programme of
both track and field events as well as a very busy road and cross-country
season. Organising these events requires hard work and the support of 100’s of
volunteers. Without marshalls, signers-in, timekeepers and place judges they
simply couldn’t be held. We are very fortunate that we have a number of
volunteers who support these events come rain or shine.
One of those supporters is Hazel Solway who regularly
attends track and road races as a timekeeper and official. We are especially
pleased to recognise Hazel’s efforts over the summer because she plays a key
role in organising the All-terrain challenge.
Not only does Hazel turn up in all weathers but she also
carries out her duties efficiently with little fuss and always has a courteous,
supportive word for all athletes.
The GIAAC is not alone in appreciating the efforts of
Hazel. She also supports the triathlon club and the Lee Merrien running club.
It is with sadness that we have received the news of the death of Christine
"Chris" De La Mare. Chris and husband Winkle were great competitors,
supporters and organisers of Guernsey athletics in the 1980's and 1990's and
Chris competed for the club many times in road and cross country events. She was
swept along with the growth of women's endurance athletics in the '80's, was a
stalwart member of teams that travelled off island and contributed to many of
the Hampshire medal winning cross country teams of the '90's. Amazingly, most of
her best form came in her late forties and early fifties and she was part of the
half marathon team that won an Island Games bronze medal in Gotland 1999.
Locally she always appeared to enjoy off road and cross country events most and
was particularly strong on the Cliff Paths - winning the 15 mile event on
numerous occasions. She calmly dealt with her illness, seemed to relish being
outdoors and was often seen walking the commons and paths of the island where
she would always greet you a cheerful smile.
Our thoughts are with Winkle and her family.
Louise Perrio improved her PB and lowered the Island record over 3,000mtrs in the mixed race held inconjunction with the All Terrain Challenge track race night.
Fast improving Luke Winberg continues to demonstrate his athletic talent with a 55second 400mtrs and a win in the 3,000mtrs.
Full results of the 3,000mtrs and other events can be found
here.

senior track and field series.
Intertrust Junior Athlete of the Month – Rebecca Le
Tissier.
Rebecca has been a club regular for years. She always tries hard and has improved hugely over the past few months.Much of that improvement is down to the effort and determination that she has put into her athletics,. She will be representing Guernsey in the junior schools athletics interinsular v Jersey on Saturday.
Smith Signs Club member of the month. Sue Trebert
Our club is fortunate to have so many committed supporters
and coaches… and none is more committed that Sue Trebert. Sue is an assistant

Guernsey's own Lee Merrien will be running in the Olympic marathon. A huge thank you to everyone involved in the campaign to get Lee selected. Lee is enjoying a short break in Lanzarote after his Virgin London Marathon run last weekend and will return to Olympic preparation training shortly.
Lee said:
Hi
Thought you might like to be one of the first to find out...I'm in! I'm going to the Olympics!!
Had to wait until it was confirmed by the BOA but now the press release has gone out I can spread the word!
Thanks for your support
Lee
Olympian :)
Initially the appeal was unsuccessful however the Selection Panel was asked to reconsider if exceptional circumstances existed, as it could under the policy. The UKA Selection Panel therefore reconvened and following consideration of all relevant facts and using its expert opinion, exercised its discretion to nominate Lee Merrien to the BOA.
Results from the first of the summer series of Track & Field meetings for junior athletes is here. Entry form for GP2 on Tuesday 15th May is here.
A message from the President of the GIAAC
Mezza, new ADO and invitation to the opening of the
athletics clubroom Thursday 3rd May at 7.00pm
There have been a number of developments this week
involving the GIAAC and this is a quick note to update you.
Lee Merrien appeal
The GIAAC submitted evidence to support the appeal that was
made by Lee to the UKA regarding selection for the Marathon. The evidence was
endorsed by the Guernsey Sports commission and was a team effort with input
from Alan Rowe, Louise Perrio and Paul Ingrouille. The main focus of the
evidence was that we believed that Lee’s case demonstrates that the criteria
omitted a set of circumstances (as have arisen) which could be considered valid
reasons for selection.
The support for Lee is overwhelming - from the GIAAC
and beyond. I’m sure that Lee will draw strength from that support regardless of
the outcome.
Appointment of new Athletics Development Officer
I am pleased to announce that we will have a new Athletics
Development Officer in post from May 1st. Many of you will have
already met Steven Green who has been on the island for the past few weeks.
Steve has already made a great impact across all aspects of the club. He has an
excellent pedigree as an athlete (he represented Jamaica twice in the
Commonwealth Games) and a very evident affection for the sport. He also has
experience of organising major sporting events, has been a prominent member of
Trafford AC where he has coached some youngsters to a national level.
Steve has thrown himself into island life so do make him
welcome when you see him at club events
Invitation to the opening of the GIAAC club room
including the wall of Fame - Thursday 3rd May at 7.00pm
Dear club members
I am very pleased to invite members to the opening of the
new GIAAC club room and the launch of the GIAAC wall of fame on thursday 3rd
May at 7.00pm. during the first Intertrust Senior athletics meeting
The GIAAC has been based at Footes Lane since the early
70’s and we are very appreciative that our track is one of the best venues for
track and field anywhere in the UK. The recent developments mean that Footes
Lane will be a real hub for sport on the island and the athletics club is
pleased to play its part in giving all islanders, young and old, the
opportunity to participate in or witness exciting sport week in week out.
We will be opening our new athletics club room on Thursday
3rd May and have also invited colleagues who, over the years, have
supported the GIAAC and helped us make it a club that has been successful in
achieving its goal of ‘fostering the sport of athletics in Guernsey’.
We are especially pleased to be unveiling the ‘wall of
fame’ which will celebrate the achievements of Guernsey athletics over the
years. Fifteen athletes have been selected for our wall of fame and we look
forward to unveiling their names on the night. It will be no surprise to let you
know that we open the wall with Percy Hodge, a Guernsey Olympian in the 1920’s
and, equally, we will be celebrating the achievements of Lee Merrien who, but
for the vagaries of the UKA selection process, would be representing GB at the
2012 Olympics. We will still be celebrating his successes alongside those of all
GIAAC athletes.
Finally, as part of the refurbishment, we are seeking items
of memorabilia – if you have any items that we can display please bring them
along.
Yours in sport, Alun Williams.
Sunday 6th May Throws and Jumps Day
GIAAC will be hosting a one off throws and jumps development day with UKA coach Trevor Hopkins on Sunday May 6th 2012 from 8am (arrive 7.45) to 3.00pm.
There will also be a session on strength and conditioning for throws and jumps.
This is an ideal opportunity aimed at U15 and above throwers/jumpers plus coaches or those interested in the event.
Places are very limited therefore if you could let Stephen Green – stevegreen2011@live.co.uk know by April 26th at the very latest I would be grateful.
Please see here Agenda of the day and Biography for Trevor Hopkins here.

Well done to the primary school's X/C team who successfully
defended the X/C inter-insular over the week-end. The event was held in the
grounds of St Ouens manor, Jersey and the team from Guernsey contained a large
number of GIAAC year five and six children. Special mention to year 4 Rhiannon
Dowinton who “acted up” in the year 5 girls race and came third..... a race won
by yet another Mason!!

Lee Valley - 25th March 2012
We had a fantastic day at Lee Valley yesterday.
The girls were brilliant, all producing PB’s and all gave
fantastic performances. The day started out with a Guernsey 1, 2, 3 in the
first heat of the 60m Hurdles in the Pentathlon for Vicky Mann, Amy Sharpe and
Sara Marley – all with PB’s. Rebecca Toll was in the second heat and got
another PB finishing 3rd. The High Jump followed with Rebecca
getting a PB of 1.44 – 8cm clear of her nearest opponent. Vicky and Amy
also got PB’s in the High Jump. All four girls did fantastic in the shot –
all surpassing their PB’s. As this was their first indoor
competition, with equipment and conditions they have never come across before –
brilliant! Not to mention the early morning start and losing an hours
sleep as the clocks went forward!
Meanwhile Grace Shearer took part in the open sprint races.
She came overall 3rd in the 60m with at time of 8.8 seconds (another
PB) – within inches of the first two. She came equal 1st in the
200m in a time of 29.1 (PB) and bearing in mind she has never run indoors or on
a 200m banked track – a fantastic achievement.
We had a great reaction from the organisers of the event
who think we have a group of very talented athletes and are keen to see Guernsey
coming over again.
AFM Super Six 2012
This year's AFM Super Six Final took place on Wednesday
at St Sampsons High School. Athletes from years 7 and 8 represented their
schools in a sprint, jump, throw and endurance run. Following an Olympic theme,
medals were awarded to the top three in each event and the team prizes decided
using a medals table. Ladies College won the girls competition and Grammar the
boys. Results can be found
here.

Sportingbet has agreed to sponsor the event that has been held annually since 1981 and we can reveal that it will feature a revised the course so that it will finish at the Weighbridge in Town instead of Bulwer Avenue.
‘We have always thought a Town finish for the Father’s Day Half Marathon would be a great way to truly experience the island from the west coast to our beautiful harbour, plus it will enable more people to come down to Town and support runners as they cross the line,’ said GIAAC member Paul Ingrouille.

Club Room Photos
GIAAC is planning to open its new club room in early May
and we are busily making arrangements to sort out decoration. We will be
establishing our ‘wall of fame’ and want to use 100’s of club images for the
wall – we will also have the facility to show loads of images through some of
the screens that we are planning to put into the room. So, we are seeking
to collect as many old and new club photos as possible. If you have electronic
images as well as hard copy photos we would appreciate receiving them so that we
can begin to select photos etc.
If you have old photos you can drop them into Footes Lane –
preferably on a training night or electronic images should be sent to Dan Smith
at dan@smithsigns.co.uk. Dan will be
collecting the images for us.
Thanks, Alun Williams

Introducing u13+ Where a race is denoted as U13+ it is open, either as training run for the older juniors or as a fun run for parents starting at either the same time or shortly after the under 13 children. The idea here is that it is a run for novice runners who might be happy to jog round the course for a bit of exercise, timed or otherwise.
Highlights were golds for Lee Merrien (Senior Men) and Katie Rowe (u15 Girls), Louise Perrio's bronze plus leading the ladies to a team victory. Senior Men's team bronze.
Results are here and Photos here.
Last day for nominations for awards are to be placed in

Awards Night Committee
The announcement of the top 100 rankings for the power of 10 website includes 60 entries from 26 athletes for GIAAC. We also were represented in nearly 30 track and field disciplines. Linked here is the full list of entries.
We had 10 entries in the top 10. Lee’s second place in the marathon just being pipped by Tom Druce being the fastest athlete on the website over 300 meters. Also notable was Kylie Robilliard’s two entries at 14th in the 60m hurdles and 12th in the 100m hurdles and special mention should be made of Katie Rowe’s 15th ranking in the 1500m under 15 and Josh Cowdrey’s 8th place in the under 17 high jump.
It’s also pleasing to see that we have six athletes ranked in the top 100 for all-time performances. Lee Merrien, Kylie Robilliard, Tom Druce, Louise Perrio and Sarah Mercier (in the steeplechase!) and Dale Garland are all included in the all-timers list. Dale is included for the 400m and is our highest raked athlete at 22nd in the 400m hurdles.
Louise Perrio is the GIAAC athlete who is mentioned most frequently with seven entries ranging from 2000m steeplechase to 10k just ahead of Dale and Sarah Mercier with six entries. Zoe Fitch is our junior with most mentions featuring in the rankings for the under 15’s triple jump, hammer and javelin.
Of course the power of 10 entries is a rough guide to how the club’s performances compare with other clubs - some events are much more competitive than others and, especially for the age rankings, performance will be shaped by factors such as how old you are nevertheless 60 entries is a pleasing outcome for all the hard work in 2011.
In our development plan we have identified as one of our goals – ‘We will increase the number of athletes who feature in the top 100 of the Power of 10 Athletics Website’
So let’s see if 2012 can see even more entries across all sections of the club.
Yours in sport, Alun Williams
Results here. After drying out the results sheets in a PB here are the results of the rather soggy NY day run. Good return by Colette Andrews who was first across the line & also good to see so many turning up in fancy dress with Warwick Helps(Superman), Terry Greening(Bananaman) and Indian duo Cath Coutanche and Sarah Nicholls taking the prizes. Special mention must go to the Pink Ladies (Sara Marley, Jess Gallienne & Eleanor "Indy" Gallagher).
There is some discussion currently going on as to whether the runner in 50th place was Alun Williams dressed as Tom Druce….. or Tom Druce dressed as Alun Williams.
Thanks must go out to helpers on day including Course Markers Louise, Dave Cros & Toby Grice. Finish Line Team Paul Frank, Sarah Mercier, Belinda Doyle, Ian Merrien and Marshalls Nick Marley, Michael Way and Ian Garner.
Fast time (23:15) by Lee Merrien whilst Louise Perrio smashes her PB and Guernsey Ladies Best. Results here.
